The EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 applies on a mandatory basis from 20 January 2027, replacing Directive 2006/42/EC for every machine placed on the EU market. Same architecture - essential health and safety requirements plus harmonised standards - but new rules on digital instructions and declarations, AI-powered safety functions, cyber-safety, and high-risk conformity.

| Area | Directive 2006/42/EC | Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 |
|---|---|---|
| Legal form | Transposed 27+ ways | Uniform, direct application across the EU |
| AI safety functions | Not addressed | Integrated provisions |
| Cyber-safety | Not addressed | Provisions for safety-relevant software data and control systems |
| Instructions & DoC | Paper expectations | Clarified conditions for digital format |
| High-risk machinery | Annex IV routes | Updated conformity assessment (Regulation Annex I) |
Machinery placed on the market before 20 January 2027 stays under the Directive - and the Commission confirms you may also state Regulation conformity on the Declaration of Conformity where applicable.
What it is not: templates and checklists, not legal advice - and not certification. Conformity assessment and CE marking are your legal process; some machinery needs a notified body.

We already CE mark under the Directive. Do we redo everything? Not everything - the essential-requirements architecture carries over. But your Declaration of Conformity, instructions format decisions, software/cyber documentation and (for high-risk categories) conformity route need review against the Regulation for anything placed on the market from 20 January 2027.
We import machinery into the EU. Our problem? Yes - check the manufacturer's switchover before your first 2027 shipment. The pack includes the importer briefing task.
Is this advice? No. It is a checklist pack built from the Commission's machinery page and Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. Confirm your conformity route against the Regulation or a notified body.
